The Fire Fox – Tulikettu

Handmade Stained Glass Artwork Inspired by Finnish Folklore

Created and handmade by Christine Saunders of Amber Dragons, The Fire Fox – Tulikettu is an original stained glass artwork inspired by one of the most evocative legends of Finnish folklore.

At the centre of this circular piece sits the mysterious fire fox beneath a dark, star-filled northern sky. Surrounded by glowing moonlight, woodland forms and sweeping areas of richly patterned glass, the artwork captures the atmosphere of an ancient story in which a magical fox races through the forest at night, sending sparks into the heavens.

Those sparks were traditionally associated with the creation of the Northern Lights – the aurora borealis.

The result is a distinctive piece of stained glass art combining folklore, wildlife, colour and storytelling in a design intended to be explored rather than simply viewed.

The Legend of the Finnish Fire Fox

In Finnish folklore, the Tulikettu, or fire fox, was a mythical fox associated with the forests and northern landscape.

Traditional stories describe the fire fox moving through the darkness with a magical, glowing quality. As the fox travelled through the forest and across the northern landscape, sparks were believed to fly from its fur or tail as it brushed against trees, rocks or snow.

The sparks rose into the night sky and became the shimmering lights that we now recognise as the aurora borealis.

The connection remains embedded in Finnish language and folklore. The Finnish word for the Northern Lights, revontulet, has its origins in this old belief surrounding the fox and its fires. Finnish linguistic and meteorological sources continue to record the traditional explanation of sparks from the mythical fox creating the lights in the northern sky. Ilmatieteen laitos

Christine has interpreted this atmospheric legend through glass, illustration, colour and light.

A Stained Glass Story Told Through Light

The composition places the fox confidently at the heart of the design.

Its warm golden and amber tones contrast dramatically against the deep night sky surrounding it. Fine detailing brings expression and character to the animal, while the darker glass gives the artwork the atmosphere of a nocturnal forest.

Above the fox, a glowing golden moon introduces another source of light into the composition.

Around the central figure, sweeping sections of richly textured and decorated glass create movement around the circular panel. These flowing areas can be read almost like trails of energy, fire or auroral light travelling through the night.

The colours change significantly across the artwork.

Deep blues and blacks establish the darkness of the northern night, while areas of gold, yellow, red, amber and copper introduce warmth and movement. Intricate decorative marks throughout the surrounding glass reward closer inspection and make the artwork visually interesting from both a distance and close-up.

Handmade by Christine Saunders

Every Amber Dragons creation reflects the individual style and craftsmanship of stained glass artist Christine Saunders.

Rather than producing mass-manufactured decorative glass, Christine creates pieces with their own subject, character and visual narrative.

The Fire Fox – Tulikettu demonstrates this particularly well.

The fox is not simply placed into a decorative stained glass surround. The entire composition has been developed around the folklore that inspired it. The moon, woodland, stars, flowing colours and central animal work together to create a complete scene.

The circular format also strengthens the design, drawing the eye naturally around the artwork before returning to the fox at its centre.

An Original Piece for Stained Glass Collectors

This artwork could particularly appeal to collectors and customers interested in:

  • Original handmade stained glass
  • Finnish and Nordic folklore
  • Fox artwork and wildlife art
  • Northern Lights and aurora-inspired art
  • Mythology and traditional storytelling
  • Woodland and nature-inspired interiors
  • Artisan glasswork
  • Unusual statement pieces
  • One-off handmade gifts
  • Decorative hanging stained glass

Because stained glass reacts continuously to natural and artificial light, the appearance of the artwork can change throughout the day.

Strong daylight can illuminate areas of colour and texture that appear much darker in softer conditions, while evening light can emphasise the warm amber and golden elements of the composition.

This changing relationship with light is one of the characteristics that makes handmade stained glass especially compelling.

A Celebration of Folklore, Nature and Craftsmanship

The Fire Fox legend provides an unusually rich subject for stained glass.

Both the mythology and the medium revolve around light.

In the folklore, the fox creates brilliant light within the darkness of the northern landscape. In Christine’s interpretation, coloured and decorated glass allows light itself to become part of the finished artwork.

That relationship gives the piece considerably more depth than a conventional wildlife illustration.

It becomes simultaneously a portrait of a fox, a representation of Finnish mythology and an exploration of how colour and light can be used to tell a story.

The Fire Fox – Tulikettu by Amber Dragons

For anyone looking for original stained glass with a story behind it, The Fire Fox – Tulikettu represents the distinctive character of Amber Dragons particularly well.

Handmade by Christine Saunders, it combines traditional stained glass craftsmanship with illustration, mythology and a highly individual artistic interpretation.

The finished artwork is designed not simply to decorate a space, but to invite curiosity.

Look closely and there is always another detail to discover — from the expression of the fox and the illuminated moon to the stars, woodland and intricate coloured patterns surrounding the central scene.

It is a piece inspired by an old northern legend, interpreted through the unmistakable creative style of Amber Dragons.
